Playa del Inglés' famous Café Wien has been closed for several days following the sudden decease of its owner, Mr. Wolfgang Dann. A funeral service will be held on March 2. The reopening date has not yet been announced.
Every day for a week now, many Café Wien regulars have been faced with a nasty surprise when they arrive at the entrance to the famous terrace in the Cita shopping centre. The doors are locked, and funeral wreaths are everywhere. Outside, signs were posted announcing the death of the owner, Mr. Wolfgang Dann.
The death occurred on Tuesday, February 20, following a heart attack
Café Wien is one of the most famous cafés in Playa del Inglés and one of the favorite meeting places for members of the gay community, who are used to spending pleasant moments there on their way back from the beach, having a coffee and a slice of cake, comfortably seated on the convivial terrace that has made the establishment such a success. But at the moment, the regulars are very disappointed, as their beloved café has closed its doors for an indefinite period.
Café Wien has been in existence for around 50 years in Playa del Inglés. It is owned by the Dann family, originally from Austria but now settled in Gran Canaria for several generations. It was their mother who first ran the establishment, raising its profile and bringing it to the level of excellence we know today. When she passed away a few years ago, her son Wolfgang took over the running of the café, but he too died suddenly last Tuesday, February 20, 2024, following a heart attack, forcing the closure of the establishment.
Wolfgang Dann was a jovial, friendly, smiling and caring man, well known to many people on and off the island. The news of his sudden death sent shock waves through the island and aroused great emotion, with many expressions of sympathy pouring in from all quarters. The family has announced that a public funeral service will be held on Saturday, Marche 2 at 17h30 at the Ecumenical Temple in Playa del Inglés to pay tribute to the dear beloved and allow everyone to pay their respects.

As far as the café is concerned, the date of reopening has not yet been announced, and several options are on the table. The new owners have not yet announced whether or not they intend to reopen, and much will depend on the wishes of Mr Dann's son, who inherited this onerous responsibility too soon, too young.
